Last week marked an important milestone in the SHARESPACE project: the final trials for the health scenario. In the health scenario, SHARESPACE technology and concepts are tested and utilized to treat patients with chronic low back pain. The trials done in this scenario focus on usability, which entails how easily and effectively users can interact with the technology.
In the initial phases of the project, the trials were done with SHARESPACE members, and experts in chronic low back pain from the hospital Vall d’Hebron. This was because the development of the SHARESPACE architecture and technology was still in developing phases. However, for this final trial, real patients that suffer from chronic low back pain participated. They were asked to do two exercises, and assess the usability of the technology in VR and AR scenarios.

The experiment was executed at the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona, and partners of DFKI were present to help with the technological set up. Overall, the trials were a large success with the patients rating the usability of the system as good. This is a meaningful step towards creating future XR-platforms that can make healthcare more accessible.
